Pending a school board discussion next Monday, the longest current winning streak in high school football will sit at 71 games until 2021.
The Caledonia School District, according to the Warrior Football Twitter account, made a decision this week that will finish the school’s football season officially on November 16th. District superintendent Craig Ihrke cited several COVID-19 cases within the high school as the key factor in the district’s decision to switch to distance learning this week and shut down extracurricular activies. There will be a practice on that day for the athletes to, in the words of head coach Carl Fruechte, get some closure with each other and turn in their pads.
It’s the latest in a sequence of difficult situations for the Warrior football team this year. Despite a 3-0 record and no signs of slowing down their yearly routine of dominance, the Warriors had had three games cancelled prior to this decision. Games scheduled for October 16th against Stewartville, November 7th against St. Charles, and a third game that would’ve been played against Pine Island, were all cancelled for one reason or another.
As mentioned at the top of the article, there is a school board meeting planned for this Monday, at which coach Fruechte and the football program “are asking for a large community presence. Please show up if you’d like to have your voice heard.”
