Organizers Say Tokyo Olympics Will Go On Despite Pandemic

Despite the ongoing pandemic and the fact that the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were postponed as a result of it, the plan to pick up the games this summer appears to still be a go.

Per the Associated Press, organizers say the Tokyo Olympics will go on despite public opposition during a surge in COVID-19. Over the weekend, a Japanese poll found only 16-percent thought the Olympics should go on this year, while 77-percent thought they should be canceled or postponed. The games were postponed last year because of COVID, and are scheduled to take place in Tokyo about six months from now.

Today, the virus caseload in Japan rose over 300-thousand, with the death toll rising above 41-hundred. The head of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee, however, says preparations for the Games will continue, and that postponing them a second time would be “absolutely impossible.”
