MLB Expands Roberto Clemente Day

By Adam Roberts – 9/14/2021

Major League Baseball is adding to the ways players can honor Roberto Clemente.

All players who were nominated for the award named after him can wear his famous number 21 on September 15th. That also applies to those who have won the award in past years. The only Brewer this applies to hasn’t been in the game for some time (Cecil Cooper) so you won’t see any Brewers with the number on tomorrow in Detroit.

Meantime, the Pittsburgh Pirates will have everybody wearing number 21 on Wednesday as Clemente played his entire career with the team. The league is also making September 15th its permanent Roberto Clemente Day this year.

The year’s nominees for the Roberto Clemente Award include Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals, Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers, Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels, and Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds.
