Packer Hall of Famer Paul Hornung Dies at Age 84

By Adam Roberts – 11/13/2020

The Golden Boy had passed away.

After fighting against dementia for many years, Lombardi-era Hall of Famer Paul Hornung has died at the age of 84.

The Golden Boy is being remembered by many on social media today, and for good reason. His on-field accomplishments are lengthy, including a 1956 Heisman Trophy at Notre Dame, being named the first overall draft selection for the Packers in 1957, four NFL Championships with Green Bay, and an induction into both the college and Pro Football Hall of Fame (1985 and 86 classes respectively).

Hornung is one of only seven players to win the Heisman and be named NFL MVP, and he achieved his Heisman honor despite playing for a 2-8 Fighting Irish team in ’56. He also set a scoring record in 1960; his 176 points on touchdowns, field goals, and extra points would stand for 46 years. Hornung is the only player in NFL history to have scored 50 touchdowns and kicked 50 field goals.

Winona Ends Football Season; More Schools Postpone Winter Sports

By Adam Roberts – 11/13/2020

The dominoes continue to fall in Minnesota. Already this week, both Caledonia and Rochester schools announced they would be ending their football seasons, and now Winona is joining the queue.

The school announced yesterday it would be transitioning to distance learning officially on November 17th, with today and next Monday serving as prep days for the official transition. The decision came one day after the Winhawk football team lost their regular season finale to Kasson-Mantorville.

Meanwhile, two more area schools announced they would be suspending the start of winter sports. We already knew the La Crosse School District was pausing the start of their winter sports seasons, and now Onalaska is doing the same. News 19’s Scott Emerich reported yesterday evening that the Hilltopper winter sports season has been moved back two weeks with a start date for practice set for November 30th; Holmen hockey coach Tim Franzini retweeted Scott’s tweet, and added that Holmen was doing the same thing.

We’ll keep an eye out for any other districts that make similar announcements in the coming days and weeks.

Viterbo Men’s Basketball Defeats Cardinal Stritch 88-62

By Adam Roberts – 11/12/2020

Earlier this week, the Viterbo women kicked off the 2020 season with a win over Culver-Stockton, and yesterday the men responded with a victory of their own.

Looking to break into the win column for the first time this year, the V-Hawk men shot 47% from 3 against Cardinal Stritch, with all five of their starters scoring in double figures. Jack Monis led scoring with 20 points in an 88-62 blowout win. Viterbo also picked up the pace on defense compared to their two losses; 28 points were generated for the V-Hawks via 17 forced turnovers.

Viterbo hosts an invitational starting November 20th.

High School Football Preview: Week Eight – Part Two

By Adam Roberts – 11/12/2020

We have arrived at what will serve as the postseason this year for Wisconsin high school football. It has been a chaotic, sometimes stressful, event-filled race to the finish this season, and the fact we are even contemplating playoff football of any kind is a testament to all the people both in front of and behind the scenes working to make this year possible.

First, a quick overview of the games that have already been played this week:

Kasson-Mantorville 47 Winona 6

Bethlehem Academy 27 Winona Cotter 26

Lanesboro 14 Houston 0

Spring Grove 28 Mabel-Canton 24

Hayfield @ Rushford-Peterson – Cancelled

Now, let’s go over the games to be played this Friday.

Prediction record so far: 3-0

DIVISION 2

    VS

PORTAGE @ ONALASKA

The Hilltoppers haven’t played in two weeks, but that last contest featured a dominant performance from quarterback Ayden Larson against a depleted Aquinas team. Larson went 13-17 for 237 yards, four scores, and an INT, and the man who has become his primary wideout target Hudson Weber had a big night of his own; 6 catches, 133 yards, 2 TDs, and a passing touchdown to Landon Peterson. Needless to say, anyone worried about the lack an Ona offense need only refer to this game and their 50-6 win over Adams-Friendship earlier this year. They also demonstrated how methodical they can be if need be; in the fourth quarter, the Hilltoppers were on defense for just one play, intercepting a Jackson Flottmeyer pass, and grinding clock the rest of the way.

For Level One, the Hilltoppers will host Portage, and on paper this one would appear to be a lock for Ona. The Warriors were shut out by the pod’s 2-seed Baraboo 38-0. On offense, the Warriors gave up the ball four times, and running the ball was particularly tough with three fumbles.

Prediction: Onalaska 35 Portage 8

   VS

TOMAH @ BARABOO

Against Aquinas, Tomah lived on the big play. QB Justin Gerke completed just 9 of his 20 pass attempts, but at over 239 yards and with four touchdowns, he clearly was instructed to attack the Blugold secondary. The result was two scores to the super tall Kade Gnewikow at a 28.3 YPC average, while Drew Bookman also had a score and averaged 49 yards a catch on two big receptions.

Gerke’s development this year has been fantastic to watch, and this week he’ll need another big outing with 6-1 Baraboo up next. The Thunderbirds have a star of their own in QB/RB/LB, who defensively is garnering interest at the D1 level. On offense, Larson has accumulated 1,430 all-purpose yards and 16 touchdowns in seven games played. Despite all the struggle of playing football in 2020, the season has been the best for Baraboo since their 6-4 2006 campaign; Steve Turkington has led the T-Birds to their first winning record this decade on the back of Larson and a crushing defense that had only one slip up against Sussex Hamilton. A potential Baraboo-Onalaska Level Two game would be a true litmus test for this program.

Prediction: Baraboo 28 Tomah 22

Division 4

   VS

WESTBY @ PRAIRIE DU CHIEN

If any game had the potential to be the lowest scoring of the night, this might be it. The Norsemen have struggled to stay consistent on offense this season, but against the Blackhawks even just a couple of scores can make for an interesting game. Prairie has been predicated on defense for some time now under Corey Koenig, and that has continued this year to the tune of 3-3. Last week, despite a 111 yard rushing performance from Richland Center running back Bryce Hillers, the Blackhawk defense was stifling in the redzone and receiver Jon Nicholson was the beneficiary of a couple of nice tosses from quarterback Maddox Cejka for all the Prairie scoring. Meanwhile, Westby in an unorthodox regular season game against Athens was gashed on the defensive line for 210 rushing yards against them, and despite one of their better offensive outings of the season, fell to the Bluejays 40-28. Look to see if Cade Fleming has another big game after running for 109 yards and a score last week to pick up the slack of a slightly off night for Garrett Vatland.

Prediction: Prairie du Chien 20 Westby 14

    VS

VIROQUA @ NEKOOSA

The Papermakers are a good case study in what it “by any means necessary” actually means. Heading into the day of their regular season finale last week against West Salem, Nekoosa appeared to be set to cancel due to a number of students having to quarantine. But head coach Mark Tuttle wanted to give his boys one final game at home, even if it meant essentially a JV team being fielded against the Panthers. Despite that 35-6 loss, the Papermakers will get another opportunity to end their home schedule on a high note against Viroqua. Even writing off last week, Nekoosa’s offense hasn’t been particularly inspiring this season, with Tuttle noting the program is clearly in a rebuild. Meanwhile, after a big showing against Altoona, Viroqua’s scoring has tapered off considerably as well; six total points in two losses to Richland Center and Wisconsin Dells. Still, Nick Schneider always has big game potential, and against an uncertain Papermaker front, maybe Schneider has another sneaky good game.

Prediction: Viroqua 22 Nekoosa 18

DIVISION 5

    VS

AQUINAS @ DARLINGTON (6pm on ESPN La Crosse 105.5, espnlacrosse.com, & TuneIn)

Last year when these two met as conference opponents, the Blugolds (who I just noticed are cropping up in this preview quite a bit) clamped down on defense for a 14-0 win. This year, if Aquinas is to repeat the feat, they will have to call upon many reserves to have big games. The Blugolds have 13 players who will be out for the game, including another game missed for running back Will Cambio. That will put more pressure again on sophomore quarterback Jackson Flottmeyer for another air raid, which will mean establishing an early connection to wide receiver Quinn Miskowski. The Redbirds often run man coverage on defense, so if Miskowski can out-athlete the corner off the snap and catch balls thrown his way, the Blugolds might keep this close. But Coach Travis Winkers will counter Flottmeyer with his own QB  Braden Davis, who despite throwing for just 74 yards against Aquinas in the loss last year had over 160 all purpose yards against Platteville last week and executed a beautiful game-winning drive against an excellent Potosi/Cassville a week before that.

Prediction: Darlington 27 Aquinas 20

   VS

MONDOVI @ LUTHER

ESPN La Crosse 105.5 was originally supposed to call the Luther-Osseo/Fairchild Level One game this week, but the Thunder were forced to cancel. Coincidentally, Fall Creek had to cancel against Mondovi, and so rather than taking a week off, the two schools agreed to simply move up their Level Two match up to this week and then end their seasons after that. The game we get will come down to Luther’s ability to contain Tanner Marsh. From a pure yardage perspective, Marsh has put up numbers that would make Bangor backs blush; in the season-opener against the aforementioned Osseo/Fairchild, Marsh ran for a season-high 321 yards, and has amassed 1,378 yards this season, leading all divisions. His average of 196 yards per game is staggering, and not to be overlooked also is his seven yards per attempt. That and a stout O-line helping him achieve those numbers could spell trouble for the hosts.

Prediction: Mondovi 34 Luther 18

   VS

MELROSE-MINDORO @ LANCASTER

My old high school coach, the legend Bob Hyland at St. Mary’s Springs, told us a story ahead of our 2009 sectional final against Lancaster. Once he started going on about how he would chase his brother around the yard with snapped arrows I started tuning out, but the core of the message was that arrows hit you hard. This is very true in Lancaster, where they thrive on hitting first, and never holding back off the snap. The past 10 years have largely been successful ones for John Hoch, though this year they’ve fallen in three games against very tough competition (vs River Valley, vs Darlington, @ #4 Mineral Point). Needless to say, they are battle hardened as they welcome Mel-Min, themselves fresh off finishing the year 4-2 with a shut out loss to Blair-Taylor.

Prediction: Lancaster 35 Mel-Min 14

DIVISION 6

    VS

COCHRANE-FOUNTAIN CITY @ BLAIR-TAYLOR

This Dairyland Level One match up is a rematch of the October 23rd meeting at C-FC, which wasn’t exactly the blow out Wildcat win many thought it might be. Give credit to the Pirates, despite the odds stacked against them, they hung right with B-T early, and even had the lead at the end of the first quarter. From there, Cain Fremstad took over and managed his offense enough to notch a touchdown in each quarter of the game. Two big interceptions of C-FC QB Austin Becker were also helpful. At home, the Wildcats should repeat.

Prediction: Blair-Taylor 28 C-FC 14

 VS

DE SOTO @ POTOSSI-CASSVILLE

Quite possibly the most intriguing playoff match up featuring an area team, these two are programs that work their rear ends off week in and out to be better than their opponents. Obviously, this should be the goal for every program, but knowing the adversity Ev Wick and the Pirates have been through the last few years coupled with the nose to the grindstone attitude of coach Mark Siegert makes this one a real feel-good game between two schools that both deserve to be in the pod final. The difference will be how much pressure De Soto can orchestrate against Levi Groom; the P/C quarterback threw six interceptions combined in the team’s two losses to Highland and Darlington this year.

Prediction: De Soto 27 Potosi-Cassville 21

Caledonia Football Season Ends Via Administrative Decision

By Adam Roberts – 11/12/2020

Pending a school board discussion next Monday, the longest current winning streak in high school football will sit at 71 games until 2021.

The Caledonia School District, according to the Warrior Football Twitter account, made a decision this week that will finish the school’s football season officially on November 16th. District superintendent Craig Ihrke cited several COVID-19 cases within the high school as the key factor in the district’s decision to switch to distance learning this week and shut down extracurricular activies. There will be a practice on that day for the athletes to, in the words of head coach Carl Fruechte, get some closure with each other and turn in their pads.

It’s the latest in a sequence of difficult situations for the Warrior football team this year. Despite a 3-0 record and no signs of slowing down their yearly routine of dominance, the Warriors had had three games cancelled prior to this decision. Games scheduled for October 16th against Stewartville, November 7th against St. Charles, and a third game that would’ve been played against Pine Island, were all cancelled for one reason or another.

As mentioned at the top of the article, there is a school board meeting planned for this Monday, at which coach Fruechte and the football program “are asking for a large community presence. Please show up if you’d like to have your voice heard.”

Kohl Center; LaBahn Arena Will Not Have Fans At Games

By Adam Roberts – 11/11/2020

Not that it comes as much of a surprise, but when the #7 Badger man open up the Kohl Center on November 25th against Eastern Illinois, it will be to a bunch of empty seats.

The Big Ten has been reluctant to have any athletic competitions this year, as many will recall with the will they-won’t they we went through this summer as far as football goes. But there will be basketball games played starting later this month. Karley Marotta was the first to tweet that the Kohl Center and LaBahn Arena would be empty this season. The decision  impacts the men’s and women’s basketball team as well as both men’s and women’s hockey.

uwbadgers.com says the decision is closely related to the approach the school has taken at Camp Randall Stadium this year, which we’ve only seen implemented once in the Badgers season opening win over Illinois. The website also says that the full men’s and women’s basketball schedules will be released soon.

Badger men’s hockey first plays at home November 19th against Michigan, while the top-ranked women first play at LaBahn on December 11th against Minnesota-Duluth.

High School Football Preview: Week Eight – Part One

By Adam Roberts – 11/11/2020

I’m switching things up a little bit this week. Since Minnesota traditionally plays its final week of the regular season out on Wednesday and Thursday, I’ll be splitting up the weekly preview into two parts. It’s primarily for my benefit so I’m not doing a ton of games on the same day and making the article a million lines long, but also to give more focus to our Minnesota teams that may not get the attention they deserve. Let’s dive into tonight’s action.

Prediction record last week: 8-2

   VS

WINONA @ KASSON-MANTORVILLE

Going over my preview from last week, I expressed confidence that Winona could find some kind of a run game against a Faribault team that had given up 385 yards on the ground in their two losses this season. But to the Falcons’ credit, they clamped down on the defensive line and held the Winhawks to just eight yards on 20 carries. On the other side, goal line defense was a challenge for Winona; Hunter Nelson had just 47 yards on the ground for Faribault, but scored three times. This week, the Winhawks visit the Komets, who boast a run-heavy offense highlighted by run-first quarterback Matt Donovan’s 119 yards on 18 carries and two scores last week against a previously unbeaten and eighth-ranked Byron. To illustrate their dominance, consider this: Donovan threw just four times with two completions for 17 yards, but the Komets still amassed 359 total yards of offense. Byron did have a big game from their own rusher Austin Freerksen (34-164-1), but Winona will likely have more difficulty finding a person to have a big game tonight.

Prediction: Kasson-Mantorville  31 Winona  7

   VS

WINONA COTTER @ BETHLEHEM ACADEMY

Neither of these two programs are strangers to sub-500 records lately. And neither team will finish above .500 this year, either. But at least for the Ramblers, they can hang their hat on a victory this year, ending a stretch of futility record-wise dating back to 2017. Coincidentally, that was the last season the Cardinals finished above .500 themselves. Offense has been hard to come by for either team this season, with the Cardinals scoring single digits or getting shut out three times and Cotter has been held to under 13 points all year. But what each team lacks in offensive firepower, they make up for in a hunger to play. You really learn a lot about a coach for how well they are able to keep a team together during difficult times, and both Seth Haun and Jim Beckman are no strangers to keeping players together through adversity. Tonight’s contest should be dictated by ground efficiency, and the Cardinals should have the slight advantage.

Prediction: Bethlehem Academy 24 Cotter 12

    VS

HOUSTON @ LANESBORO

I know very few people who would’ve given the Hurricanes much of a chance against #3 Grand Meadow on the road last week, and the Super Larks’ 403 yards of offense was proof enough of that. That’s not to say Houston was completely inept; Issac Heyer racked up 112 yards on seven carries with a score, certainly a statement against a usually airtight Grand Meadow front. This week, they face Lanesboro, who’s only loss this season was a close contest against a good LeRoy-Ostrander team to open the season. Last week in a 30-7 one-sided win over Southland, the offense once again was on a roll for the Burros, who this season have averaged just over 34 points per game. Conversely, the Hurricane defense has been gashed in multiple weeks, giving up a combined 118 points to the Cardinals and Super Larks.

Prediction: Lanesboro 31 Houston 14

   VS

MABEL-CANTON @ SPRING GROVE (THURSDAY)

CAT FIGHT! Both Mabel-Canton and Spring Grove feasted on the bottom two teams in the conference last week, with the Lions methodically keeping the offense productive against Lyle-Pacelli and the Cougars run-run-running against Kingsland and exploding for 24 points in the second quarter on their way to a 46-20 win. As is the case with many games listed above, this one comes down to production in the run game, and who executes run routes better. The Cougars surrendered 150 yards against the Knights, but were able to keep any one back from having a big day, while Spring grove spread their rushing out for 178 team yards on the ground, led by Hunter Holland with 78 yards. A key to this game will be which defense is more opportunistic; last week the Lions stole two fumbles away and picked off L-P three times.

Prediction: Spring Grove 27 Mabel-Canton 21

    VS

HAYFIELD @ RUSHFORD-PETERSON (THURSDAY)

The Trojan offense finally came full circle last week against Winona Cotter, and they could make it back-to-back big games this week against Hayfield. The Vikings are very much a pass-first team, and scored the Fillmore Central secondary last week with 263 yards through the air from quarterback Ethan Pack. But those yards didn’t yield a whole lot of points, and a grand total of 7 rush yards didn’t help much either in the 32-8 loss. As long as the Trojans can learn from watching film and referring back to their own game against the Falcons, they probably have just enough offense to keep up with another big Pack passing day.

Prediction: Rushford-Peterson 28 Hayfield 13

UPDATE: Per both schools’ Twitter pages, this game has been cancelled for COVID-19 reasons. Rushford-Peterson will await their sectional seeding later today while Hayfield will opt out of the postseason.

Viterbo Wins Women’s Basketball Opener vs Culver-Stockton

By Adam Roberts – 11/11/2020

Over the last 24 hours, La Crosse Central and Logan announced they would be postponing their winter sports over COVID-19 concerns, and at the college level UWL basketball is on hold for the moment. But last night at R.W. Beggs Sr. Gym the Viterbo women took the floor against Culver Stockton. Masked up and in front of a limited crowd of 50 or so spectators, the V-Hawks used a late second half push to defeat the Wildcats 64-54.

Senior Ambree Schlosser led the way for for Viterbo with 12 points, six rebounds, and an assist. She was followed by Allie Wojtysiak with 11 points and Tomah’s Madison Lindauer with 8.

Viterbo returns to the floor on Saturday at Northwestern-St Paul.

Wisconsin MBB To Play Northern Iowa December 16th

By Adam Roberts – 11/10/2020

The Badger men’s basketball schedule continues to come together piece by piece.

We already knew that Wisconsin would have at least three games to play in addition to their Big Ten schedule with games planned against Eastern Illinois November 25th, at Marquette on December 4th, and against Louisville in Madison as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on December 11th. We can now add one more contest: Northern Iowa will be at the Kohl Center on December 16th.

The Panthers are a formidable foe to face early in the season, coming off a 25-6 regular season record last year that netted them the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title. The game will also feature A.J. Green (not to be confused with the veteran Bungl…erm excuse me, BENgals receiver), who received a number of big school offers. Green was the team’s leading scorer as a sophomore last year.

We’ll continue to pass along the rest of the Badgers’ schedule as it comes out. You should also check out @MitchellSpeltz on Twitter for more Badger updates.

Bucks G Brown Reaches Settlement

By Adam Roberts – 11/10/2020

Bucks guard Sterling Brown has agreed to a 750-thousand-dollar settlement in his civil rights lawsuit against the city of Milwaukee.

In January of 2018, Brown says police targeted him outside a Walgreens because he is Black. Police used a stun gun on Brown when he didn’t remove his hands from his pockets. Brown filed the lawsuit in June of 2018 after body cam footage of the incident was released.

Brown initially had received a 400,000 dollar offer back in October of last year which he rejected.

ESPN’s Eric Woodyard reported that in addition to money, Brown wants the settlement to include a joint statement from the City of Milwaukee that includes an admission of a constitutional violation, as well as a commitment to incorporate changes to the Milwaukee Police Department Standard Operating Procedures.
