Viterbo Volleyball Prepares For NAIA Tournament Pool Play

By Adam Roberts – 4/26/2021

Normally, Tuesdays this time of year are mostly filled with high school spring sporting events in the area. But with all the schedule shuffling, it is anything but a usual year. And starting tomorrow, Viterbo women’s volleyball will begin their first day of pool play in the NAIA Tournament.

It doesn’t start out easy for the 17th-ranked V-Hawks, who’s last game was a straight-set win over Madonna of Michigan; they open pool play bright and early tomorrow morning against the top-ranked University of Jamestown. The Jimmies’ only loss this year was to Northwestern of St. Paul back in October, and they ran roughshod on the GPAC this season. After Jamestown, Viterbo faces #16 University of Providence.

Should Viterbo advance to bracket play, that will start on Thursday in Sioux City, Iowa.

Woodruff Dominant Again; Brewers Take Series vs Cubs

By Adam Roberts – 4/26/2021

It’s hard to believe that going into Sunday afternoon’s Brewers-Cubs series finale, Milwaukee pitcher Brandon Woodruff hadn’t won a game against Chicago. He has firmly established himself along with Corbin Burnes as one of, if not the, most dominant 1-2 pitching duos in baseball this season so far. It’s was only a matter of time before he crossed a win against the Northsiders off the list.

Woodruff stuck out eight over six scoreless innings to earn his first win in 11 career appearances against the Cubs. Luis Urías hit a two-run single during Milwaukee’s five-run ninth inning as the Brewers took two-of-three in the series to conclude their road trip with a 5-and-1 record. As a team, Milwaukee surrendered just four hits on a chilly 44 degree day at Wrigley, and combined with a solid outing from Jake Arrieta, this win was no guarantee.

“There’s the familiarity there of just facing the guys,” Woodruff said after the game. “Obviously they’ve seen me a lot. I’ve seen them. I think the biggest thing it just comes down to is executing pitches.”

The Brewers are 13-and-8 and host the Marlins tonight.

Badger MBB Head Coach Greg Gard Extended Through 2026

By Adam Roberts – 4/23/2021

John Pappadopoulos’s favorite head basketball coach is sticking around for another few years in Madison.

Greg Gard was one of six Wisconsin coaches the school announced would be receiving an extension, keeping him with the program until mid 2026. Along with Gard, head football coach Paul Chryst also received an extension through January of 2026, both men and women’s hockey coaches Tony Granato and Mark Johnson are being kept until mid 2026, and the swimming & diving and wrestling coaches will also be kept through 2024.

In his five seasons with Wisconsin, Gard is 101-57, most recently losing to eventual tournament champion Baylor in the Second Round. The Badgers finished 18-13 in the 2020-21 regular season.

College Football Playoff Likely Sticking With Four Teams

By Adam Roberts – 4/23/2021

While some people believe The College Football Playoff needs to be expanded to eight, 16 or even more teams to give more teams a shot at the championship, it appears the CFP likely won’t be expanding from its current four teams.

Executive Director Bill Hancock said a working group affirmed its support in keeping the four-team playoff. This comes as the same group has looked at more than 60 possible changes, which include a playoff of up to 16 teams. Some fans have clamored for an expansion as teams like Alabama and Clemson routinely make the playoff and play for the title.

The management committee did present some possibilities for future expansion, with models including six, eight, 10, 12, and 16 teams. The current agreement doesn’t expire until after the 2025 season, meaning any change would likely be years away anyways.

Alabama is the defending national champion heading into next season, while Wisconsin finished well outside of the Top 25 at 4-3.

Packers Reach Agreement With DB Chandon Sullivan

By Adam Roberts – 4/23/2021

The second-highest rated Packers cornerback will be back in 2021.

DB Chandon Sullivan has reached an agreement with the team per his agency Katz Brothers Sports. Sullivan has been in Green Bay since he was let go from Philly after the 2019 Draft. Sullivan made field appearances in each regular season game last year recording 41 tackles, a pick six, and six passes defended.

As for this year’s draft, the countdown to the fun from Cleveland is on. The festivities begin one week from yesterday, and we’ll have complete Day One and Two coverage from Buffalo Wild Wings in Onalaska. Jordy Ramirez and I will man the ship Thursday and be joined by John Pappadopoulos after The Sports Lead, then Sports Lead Badger correspondent Mitchell Speltz will be at the steering wheel for Friday night.

Wisconsin Women’s Volleyball Faces Texas In Final Four Tonight

By Adam Roberts – 4/22/2021

They upset the Longhorns a few years ago, but tonight Wisconsin women’s volleyball is hoping to avoid the tables being turned.

The top-seeded Badgers face #5 Texas in the semifinals tonight in Omaha. Wisconsin was pushed to the limit before beating Florida in its first five-set match of the year in the quarterfinals. The teams have met eight times before and split those matches. The Badgers have won the last three, including that shocking upset of the top-ranked Longhorns in the 2013 National Semifinals.

As far as this year’s team goes, the Longhorns have four potential All-Americans, including 6’2 outside hitter Jogan Eggleston, who’s averaging nearly 5 kills per set and hitting .323 this fall. Eggleston had 18 kills, 5 blocks and 5 aces in Monday’s 4-set win over Nebraska.

Kentucky and Washington meet in the other semifinal match.

Jeopardy! Ratings Soar With Rodgers

By Adam Roberts – 4/22/2021

Answer: This weekly quiz show saw a noted spike in its ratings when a sometimes mustachioed quarterback served as a guest host.

What is Jeopardy!?

Jeopardy! was apparently in good hands with Aaron Rodgers calling the signals (and that’s not an Allstate pun, we all now Rahdgahs is aligned with State Farm). The game show’s Nielsen ratings jumped up 14-percent in the Green Bay Packers’ quarterback first week as the guest host. Ratings for the show had been declining with guests hosts after the death of Alex Trebek. Rodgers changed that as Jeopardy moved back into the top slot among syndicated game shows.

Anderson Cooper is now at the podium, followed by Bill Whitaker, Mayim Bialik, and Savannah Guthrie.

NFL Releases Rule Changes; Gives Date for Schedule Release

By Adam Roberts – 4/21/2021

The NFL has unveiled its yearly changes that will be coming to the league for the 2021 season.

Among the new rules was a rejection for a full-time sky judge, while also expanding the influence of replay officials as more coaches are demanding game-day officials be subjected to more oversight. Per ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, replay officials will be able to offer referees advice based on what they’ve seen on broadcast replays in matters of possession, completed or intercepted passes, ball location, and whether a player is down by contact.

Other changed include:

  • A relaxation of rules regarding what numbers a player wears. Single digit numbers are now available to running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, defensive backs, and linebackers.
  • A one-year experiment to try and change up the onside kick. The receiving team on kickoffs will only be allowed to have nine players within 25 yards of the bal.
  • Overtime in preseason games has been eliminated.
  • A loss of down is charged with two passes are completed behind the line of scrimmage

The NFL will also release its schedule for the upcoming season in just a few weeks. The league confirmed the schedule will come out on May 12th at 8 p.m. Eastern. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has previously said he’s expecting stadiums across the league to be full. Some teams did have fans in attendance last season, but the stadiums, such as Lambeau Field in the final few home games of the regular and postseason, were at reduced capacity.

Melrose-Mindoro GBB Coach Joey Arneson Stepping Down

By Adam Roberts – 4/21/2021

A 12 year career with the Mustangs of Melrose-Mindoro appears to be coming to an end for girl’s basketball head coach Joey Arneson.

Wissports.net’s Norbert Durst said on Twitter Arneson is stepping down as head coach, following a very impressive stretch for the Mustangs in both the Dairyland Conference and in the postseason. While contending with the dominance of Aquinas over the last few years in Division 4, Mel-Min still has been able to etch out a brand under Arneson, reaching the state title game three straight years from 2018 to 2020.

Mel-Min activities director Connie Craig has not yet confirmed the news, and we will update this story when that confirmation comes through.

Corbin Burnes Continues Hot Start; Brewers Beat Padres 6-0

By Adam Roberts – 4/21/2021

Six more innings, 10 more strikeouts, and still no walks. That was the night for Brewers’ pitcher Corbin Burnes against the Padres.

The 6-0 Milwaukee win will probably be remembered more for the acrobatic catch made by fill-in left fielder Billy McKinney in the fourth inning, but Burnes’ outing must also be remembered. We’ve already written one article this month about the incredible start to Burnes’ season, and so far, the plan to conserve Burnes’ production while reaping its benefits appears to be working perfectly for the team.

Since his loss to the Twins in game two of the regular season, Corbin hasn’t been pushed past the sixth inning when he easily could have been. While it’s tough to see this pace continue all year for Burnes, he could be in some historic company if it were to. The all-time single season strikeout record is a ludicrously high 511 from the arm of Matt Kilroy on the 1886 Baltimore Orioles team, but Burnes is on pace for 360, which would be the 16th most in a single season behind Randy Johnson’s 364 in 1999.

The Crew go for the series sweep this afternoon at Petco Park. Adrian Houser gets the start against San Diego righty Dinelson Lamet.
