Packers’ Home Games Fanless For Rest of 2020

By Adam Roberts – 11/6/2020

A little while ago, a map published by the New York Times showed where COVID-19 cases were spiking the most in the nation. Areas hit hardest by the virus were dark red, and while you might think densely-populated urban centers would dominate the map, there was one area that stood out from the rest.

Northeast Wisconsin has been a hotbed for COVID-19 cases for some time now, for a plethora of reasons. But people in the community had still been holding out hope that Lambeau Field might still open up its gates for fans yet this season. After all, mask signs and other social distancing reminders had been installed at the stadium earlier last month, leading some to believe maybe fans at games would be a possibility.

Now it looks like those signs will be for any fans that might go to games in 2021 after the Packers released a statement this week announcing an indefinite hold on any fans at games.

In the statement, the team notes “In order to host fans, the area will need to see a significant improvement in the rate of hospitalizations, as well as in the community infection and positivity rates. This is based on recommendations from community healthcare and public health officials.” Team President/CEO Mark Murphy did note that all hope may not be lost. “If the situation improves in the community and state, we’ll be in position to safely welcome fans to games at Lambeau Field yet this season.” Murphy noted in the statement.

Green Bay is next home November 15th against Jacksonville, and is currently dealing with another player testing positive after last night’s win over San Francisco.

Packers Beat 49ers 34-17; Adams Makes History

By Adam Roberts – 11/6/2020

It’s safe to say without the play of wide receiver Davante Adams, the Packers would not be currently sitting at 6-2 following a 34-17 win over the 49ers last night. The kind of play Adams has had this season put him up there with the best in the NFL; last night he recorded 10 catches for 173 yards and a first quarter score. He also became the first player in NFL history to have 3 games with 10 catches for 150 receiving yards in his team’s first eight games of a season. The fact he accomplished the feat while just playing in six of those eight games is even more impressive.

Now the conversation is being had about whether or not Adams might be the best wideout in football. While many would modestly shoot down that kind of talk, Adams is confident that his play of late puts him in the conversation. “I think that’s fair to say.” Adams said after the game last night. “I think that’s not being conceited. That’s just being confident. I think, obviously, what I’ve done and what I’m going to continue to do is going to prove that to anybody who isn’t on board with that.”

Statistically speaking, Adams ranks fifth on the ESPN.com list of receivers in the league for receiving yards, sixth in receptions, and leads the league in touchdown catches. Keep in mind, this is with just six games under his belt; most of the top statistical receivers in the league have at least an extra game played.

With no trades made for another deep threat receiver, Adams will likely keep getting fed by Aaron Rodgers in the second half of the season barring injury. Green Bay has five games remaining this season against teams in the bottom half of the league in passing yards allowed (Jacksonville, Bears twice, Carolina, and Tennessee), meaning another few 100+ yard games aren’t out of the question.

To those who passed on Adams in fantasy this year, shame!

NBAPA Expected To Approve Season Start

By Adam Roberts – 11/5/2020

We could have more answers on when we’ll see the Bucks and the rest of the NBA begin the 2020-21 season after a 19-20 season that saw a months-long suspension and a finish inside a bubble.

According to Associated Press reports, the NBA Players Association is expected to approve a December 22nd start to the season. The league’s board of governors and the NBAPA met today to discuss the reduced 72-game schedule. Commissioner Adam Silver reportedly expects a firm decision by this week to begin the quick turnaround from the end of last season.

In addition, we continue to wait and see what will happen with the Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Rumors have circulated that he will in fact sign a super-max, but these have been from non-credible sources.

Brewers Make Coaching Changes

By Adam Roberts – 11/5/2020

While we continue to wait and see if reliever Devin Williams can snag the NL Rookie of the Year Award for his accomplishments on the mound, the Brewers have announced some coaching changes for next year.

Milwaukee has added Quintin Berry to their 2021 coaching staff; he played parts of five seasons in the majors and 13 in the minors, where he logged 399 stolen bases. Berry replaces long-time third base coach Ed Sedar, who is switching to an advisor to the big league coaching staff. The rest of the staff remains intact.

Sedar had been the Brewers’ first-base coach from 2007-10 and third-base coach from 2011-20, on top of his work in the organization as a minor league outfield and base-running coordinator and minor league field coordinator. In all, his 28 year coaching tenure has made him one of the most recognizable last names in a Brewers jersey across four decades.

High School Football Preview: Week Seven

By Adam Roberts – 11/5/2020

With the abridged 2020 playoffs in view, we look ahead to the final week of regular season high school football Wisconsin; Minnesota still has one week remaining, with the traditional schedule of mostly Wednesday-Thursday games.

This year, the WIAA playoffs will work differently than years in the past. The always busy Travis Wilson at Wissports.net wrote an article that goes into much further detail on the procedure than I will, but it essentially boils down to a 224-team field, divided into seven divisions with eight-team regional groups. The groups will then be broken down into four-team “pods”, which will be put together ideally featuring the one through four seeds in one pod and the five through eight seeds in a second pod. The field will be determined late tomorrow night into very early Saturday morning with brackets released later on Saturday. It’s also important to note that teams can opt out of this playoff format, and we’ve seen a few that already have across the state.

For now, let’s take a look at the games that will be played this week.

Last Week’s Predictions: 7-5

   VS

RUSHFORD-PETERSON @ WINONA COTTER (Thursday)

I want to send my apologies to the Rambler faithful. Over the course of this season, breaking down every game I know is happening, I’ve let Winona Cotter slip through the cracks a couple of times. I even missed that the Ramblers were able to finally win a football game for the first time since October 13th, 2017 with their 12-0 victory over St. James on October 12th. Much like Luther, I wrongfully assumed that when they missed their game on October 16th that it signaled the end of their season. While I won’t make that same mistake again, I can’t say that will translate to a win this week against Rushford-Peterson. Sure, the Trojans are 0-4 and lost last week to Goodhue. But it’s not like R-P doesn’t have an offense; they’ve put up at least 20 points in every game this year. Their defense has done them in so far, giving up 32 points per game. That said, the Ramblers’ offense has left a lot to be desired again this year, and last week were shut out by Fillmore Central 35-0.

Prediction: Rusford-Peterson 28 Winona Cotter 7

   VS

WINONA @ FARIBAULT

You really do have to feel for the Winhawks this year. I don’t think I know any other team that’s had as many COVID cancellations-that-then-got-rescheduled-day-of than Winona. This game was scheduled for last night, then it was off with little warning. Now it’s back on again. I actually had a piece prepared on this game before it was cancelled, but unfortunately deleted it after learning about the games’ then-cancellation. As it is, Winona will be up against a Falcons team tonight that defeated Austin last week by a much wider margin than the Winhawks did to begin the season. The Falcons put up 385 total yards of offense against the Packers, 226 of which came on the ground, a part of the offense that Winona was notably lacking in against Rochester Century last week. Dominic Davis has had splashes of excellence this season for the Winhawks, but last week he was held to just 17 yards for the game. If Winona wants to bounce back, Davis needs to be fed the rock and the line needs to out-muscle the Falcons and open holes. Faribault presents an opportunity on that front; in their losses this year to Kasson-Mantorville and Mankato East, they gave up 385 rushing yards.

Prediction: Winona 24 Faribault 17

   VS

AQUINAS @ TOMAH (ESPN La Crosse 105.5, espnlacrosse.com, TuneIn @ 6pm)

Speaking with Aquinas head coach Tom Lee this week, he made mention about how aggressive the West Salem defense was against them two weeks ago. (The offense was as well, especially in the fourth quarter when the Blugolds were only able to get off one offensive play: an interception) That was the case again last week against Onalaska, and suddenly a previously 3-0 Blugold team is now 3-2 and banged up badly. In addition to senior running back Will Cambio, four other players are going to be having knee surgery, making the Blugolds very similar to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL. They take on Tomah this week, who just got one of the better statistical games out of senior QB Justin Gerke (11-24, 236 yards, 4 TDs, 120.8 QBR). Gerke will be looking to take advantage of a depleted Aquinas defense, specifically targeting Kade Gnewikow and Luke Buckendahl. Kade had a big week last week against Westby as well, including a special teams score.

Prediction: Tomah 27 Aquinas 13

   VS

VIROQUA @ WISCONSIN DELLS

As luck would have it, the Viroqua Blackhawks didn’t end up having to face Richland Center running back Bryce Hillers last week. Instead, they were run over by Easton Darling, who emerged out of nowhere for 170 yards and two touchdowns. For reference, the senior had just three carries for 10 yards coming into last week’s game. It just goes to show you that brilliance can come out of nowhere! For what it’s worth, Viroqua’s Nick Schneider continued his excellent season running the ball, keeping the Blackhawks in the game with a nearly 8 YPC average for 135 yards on 17 carries plus a score. This week Viroqua plays Wisconsin Dells, and this year’s Chiefs team at 3-2 has had an up-and-down year. They’ve looked great in their wins (36-8; 40-0; a defensive 14-7 game), and quite the opposite in their losses (7-22; 7-45). The two teams have one common opponent in Mauston, and the Golden Eagles dispatched of both teams fairly easily.

Prediction: Wisconsin Dells 22 Viroqua 13

   VS

WESTBY @ ATHENS

After a week of ineptitude offensively for Westby against Kettle Moraine Lutheran, the Norsemen were hoping to find their footing on offense against Tomah. While they did so to an extent, Justin Gerke had arguably his best game of the season against the Norsemen in a 47-26 Timberwolves win. Garrett Vatland was good on the ground for Westby, but apart from his stats the Norsemen have not been able to consistently move the ball goal line to goal line. This week they visit Marawood foe Athens, and the Bluejays are likely going to be hungry for a rebound win to wrap up their regular season after surrendering a 22-13 fourth quarter lead against Abbotsford. The Jays run a very collegiate style of offense, with quarterback Cooper Diedrich serving as the primary weapon. Diedrich leads the team in rushing and passing this year, and also has split out and played receiver on a select number of plays.

Prediction: Athens 27 Westby 14

   VS

POTOSI/CASSVILLE @ LUTHER

Every so often, you hear the expression “I went to a football game, and a basketball game broke out” when you have some of those Big 12-esque scores like 61-56 or 70-63. Last week against Hillsboro, Luther arrived for a football game and a baseball game broke out. A deadlocked 0-0 tie was finally broken in the fourth quarter when quarterback Dillon Yang scuttled into the end zone from five yards out. It was the Knights’ first win since opening the season with a blowout victory at Boscobel and their first game played since early October after their contests against Iowa-Grant and Ithaca were cancelled. To end the regular season, the Knights will have a formidable challenge against Potosi/Cassville, fresh off a 23-20 loss to Darlington on a nearly last-second 25 yard Cole Christ field goal. It was a miracle that the Chieftains were in the game at the end at all, given four Levi Groom interceptions. However, P/C is always looking to fuel their offensive machine. For reference, look to their October 16th loss against Highland where they accumulated 459 yards in a losing effort and the 223 yards on the ground for Ashton Spitzack. An opportunistic Chieftans O could be too much for the Knight defense.

Prediction: Potosi/Cassville 34 Luther 16

    VS

BLAIR-TAYLOR @ MELROSE-MINDORO

To the Dairyland we go once again, a conference that while it has seen its share of hiccups due to COVID, has been the closest thing to a cohesive conference season we’ve had in the area this year. This match up has perennially been a season highlight, with both teams usually duking it out for the title. This week, Blair-Taylor and Mel-Min come into the game separated by a half game at the top of the conference, and each one is fresh off a win the week before. The undefeated Wildcats were up 26-0 after one quarter against Eleva-Strum last week courtesy of three Cain Fermstad touchdown passes, and never looked back. The Mustangs meanwhile had a closer game against Augusta last week, but a 25 yard Jason Arzt touchdown run with 1:08 to go in the fourth put things out of reach for the Beavers. The Mustangs are the home team this week, but B-T in my opinion has the greater ability to produce offensive fireworks, something the Mustangs haven’t done a ton of this year.

Prediction: Blair-Taylor 34 Mel-Min 21

    VS

COCHRANE-FOUNTAIN CITY @ ELEVA-STRUM

Both C-FC and Eleva-Strum are hoping to end the season on a better note than their respective games last week. The Pirates, much like the Cardinals against Blair-Taylor, fell behind early to Pepin-Alma, and were unable to mount much resistance at any point. The difference this week will be which quarterback is more gutsy and willing to try and make things happen. Between Austin Becker for C-FC and Nick Higley for E-S, Becker has shown more of an ability to do that.

Prediction: C-FC 28 E-S 14

   VS

SPRING GROVE @ LYLE-PACELLI (SATURDAY)

Conference foes meet in Austin on Saturday, with the Lions riding a wave of confidence following their 34-8 win over Kingsland last week. The Lions run game churned out four touchdowns, and helped secure a huge Spring Grove time of possession advantage. The Knights are the only common opponent for the two schools this year, with L-P falling to the Knights to begin the season 44-14.

Prediction: Spring Grove 27 Lyle-Pacelli 12

    VS

#3 (9-MAN) GRAND MEADOW @ HOUSTON

If you missed our Tweet from last Friday, we want to give a huge shoutout to the Houston football program. Post Bulletin Sports Reporter Issac Trotter captured the moment Houston and LeRoy Ostrander agreed to exchange touchdowns so that Brody Larson, a L-O team manager living with Hurler Syndrome could have a special memory that he will carry for the rest of his life. Much respect to the Hurricanes from us at ESPN La Crosse 105.5.

Looking at this week’s match up, it’s hard to see a path to victory for the Hurricanes against third-ranked Grand Meadow. The four-time 9-man state champs beat Southland 22-11 last week (Scoragami anyone?), and the game ended with a nice-looking seven-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Evan Oehlke to Dustin Copley. The Super Larks should fly high this week.

Prediction: Grand Meadow 41 Houston 16

Former Badger MBB Coach Bo Ryan To Be Inducted Into UW Athletics Hall Of Fame

By Adam Roberts – 11/4/2020

The early 21st century at the Kohl Center was defined by the Bo Ryan style of basketball for the Wisconsin men. It was a style often duplicated in high school gyms across the state in an attempt to prepare potential Badgers for what they would encounter at that level, and for good reason. In between 2001 and 2015, the Ryan-led Badgers won 364 games, seven Big Ten titles, never finished lower than fourth in the conference, never missed the NCAA tournament, went to back-to-back Final Fours and played in the 2015 National Championship game.

For all his contributions to modern Badger basketball, Ryan is going to be enshrined among the immortal at the UW Athletics Hall of Fame.

As of right now, an official induction ceremony is on hold due to the pandemic, but Ryan says he is very happy to be a part of the Hall, and in particular he is glad he’ll be joining alongside former player Mike Wlkinson.

“Mike was such a delight to coach” says Ryan. “Just such a hard worker, soaked up everything that was given to him. [He] showed respect for everyone in the program…truly one of those guys that was happy to be there.”

A native of Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, Wilkinson was the personification of a Bo Ryan guy; he played through his senior year, averaging 14.3 points per game and earning an All-Big Ten First Team selection his senior year. He was also just the second player in school history to finish with at least 1,500 points and 800 rebounds.

Ryan entered the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017.

49ers Shut Down Facility; Game vs Packers Still On

By Adam Roberts – 11/4/2020

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the San Francisco 49ers have shut down their facility today after receiving a positive COVID-19 test.

The positive test came from wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, adding to a laundry list of 49er injuries that has the 2010 Packers looking concerned for their well being (remember the Pack won the Super Bowl that season with 16 players finishing the season on injured reserve, but the 49ers are currently without usual starters at the quarterback, running back, and tight end positions).

As of 11am this morning, the NFL said the game tomorrow evening was still on as scheduled. ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reported that the team was going through their final walkthroughs before leaving for the Bay Area. The team is expected to take off from Austin Straubel Airport at 4pm this afternoon local time.

Packers and Vikings Make No Moves at Trade Deadline

By Adam Roberts – 11/4/2020

The tried and true Ted Thompson approach to outside help for the Green Bay Packers organization appears to have transferred over to Brian Gutekunst.

The current Packer GM reportedly was in disagreement with head coach Matt LaFleur about the short-term cost of Houston Texans wide receiver Will Fuller, and so no move for the veteran wideout was made. LaFleur noted yesterday that injured receiver Allen Lazard is close to returning, but many fans certainly wanted to see some kind of a move made by the team’s front office to provide quarterback Aaron Rodgers with an additional deep-threat heading into the second half of the season.

“I think he’s done everything we’ve asked him to” LaFleur said about Lazard. “It’s just a matter of when we feel it’s safe for him to go out there…he wants to be out there in the worst way…but we’re gonna take our time and be smart about him, and make sure that he’s able to go out there and play to the level that he’s been able to do for the last year and a half.”

When he was asked about how close the Packers actually were to acquiring Fuller, LaFleur said he didn’t “know if anything ever got that serious”.

Meanwhile in Minnesota, with a 2-5 record it was unlikely for the team to be buyers at the deadline, but many thought they would offload some veterans. However, ESPN’s Courtney Cronin wrote a piece indicating that the Vikings may have a change of heart after winning 28-22 over Green Bay last weekend, and as it turned out, they didn’t send anyone on their way. Perhaps coach Mike Zimmer, GM Rick Speilman, and the front office may have second thoughts on their chances after all.

In other Vikings news, today running back Dalvin Cook was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week. Cook of course was nearly unstoppable against the Packers, gaining over 200 all purpose yards and scoring four touchdowns, making history as the first player to score a touchdown on each of his team’s first four possessions of a game since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970.

Wisconsin Football COVID-19 Outbreak Now at 27; Game vs Purdue Cancelled

By Adam Roberts – 11/3/2020

It if wasn’t clear that last weekend’s Badger football cancellation was not an attempt to duck having to play Nebraska, today’s news should finally put that notion to rest for good.

The COVID-19 outbreak within the Wisconsin program is now at 27 cases (15 student-athletes and 12 staff members), and so the team’s scheduled game against Purdue this weekend has been cancelled. Like the Nebraska game, this one will be ruled a no-contest.

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez announced the decision earlier this morning. “I share in the disappointment of our student-athletes and staff,” Alvarez said. “We have seen a level of improvement in our testing numbers, but not enough to give us confidence to resume normal activities and play our game on Saturday. We will continue to test regularly, take the proper health-related precautions and look forward to getting our team back on the field as soon as possible.”

The next planned update from the school is expected to come on November 7th; Wisconsin is next scheduled to face #23 Michigan in Ann Arbor on the 14th. With two games now no-contests, Wisconsin would need to play out the remainder of its schedule without interruption to qualify for the Big Ten Championship Game (@ #23 MICH 11/14; @ NW 11/21; vs MINN 11/28; vs #13 IU 12/5; @ IOWA 12/12).

Brewers’ P Williams Finalist For ROY

By Adam Roberts – 11/3/2020

Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Devin Williams turned heads this year with his excellence in late innings on the mound, and the already decorated pitcher is now in the running for the best honor a rookie in either league can receive.

Williams is one of three finalists for the National League Rookie of the Year award. The other two finalists are Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm and Padres infielder Jake Cronenworth.

Williams was already named the NL reliever of the year for this season, and was 4-and-1 with a 0.33 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 27 innings this year. His absence from the Wild Card Series against the eventual World Series-champion LA Dodgers was felt; Williams suffered from an arm injury, and without himself and Corbin Burnes the team didn’t stand much of a chance against the Dodgers.
