Vikings Cut LS Austin Cutting

By Adam Roberts – 12/2/2020

Despite the previous article I wrote detailing the return of wide receiver Adam Thielen to the Minnesota Vikings as they try and manufacture a wild card run, change is still needed on the Vikings special teams unit, which came yesterday evening.

The Vikings have cut long snapper Austin Cutting, a seventh-round pick last year from the Air Force Academy. In a world where one gaff can be a career-ender depending on the situation, Cutting had a low snap in the team’s game against Chicago and had previously missed time on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Minnesota singed a veteran in Andrew DePaola the week after the Bears game, who will take over the role full-time now.

Vikings WR Adam Thielen Activated From Reserve/COVID-19 List

By Adam Roberts – 12/2/2020

Believe it or not, weeks after some in the national media dubbed the Minnesota Vikings the worst team in football, they’re suddenly right back in the wild card race.

Since starting the year 1-5, the Vikings have won four of their last five, but with little room for error and a semi-difficult schedule to finish the year, they would certainly love to be at full strength for the stretch run. Today, one of their big receiving weapons was given the go-ahead to return to action.

The team has activated wide receiver Adam Thielen from the COVID-19 list. Thielen missed Sunday’s win over Carolina after landing on the list November 23rd. He has racked up 49 catches for 646 yards and eleven touchdowns this season.

Minnesota currently sits 8th in the NFC at 5-6, one game behind 6-5 Arizona for the 7th and final playoff spot in the expanded postseason, and could get back to .500 this weekend with a home game against 1-10 Jacksonville.

Bucks To Play Warriors On Christmas

By Adam Roberts – 12/2/2020

Giannis and the Bucks will once again be a featured part of the NBA’s Christmas Day showcase, arguably the biggest regular season day for games.

Milwaukee will welcome Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors to Fiserv on December 25th in the second of five top tier match ups including Mavs-Lakers, Pelicans-Heat, Nets-Celtics, and Clippers-Nuggets.

The game will the the first time Milwaukee has hosted a Christmas Day game since 1968.

If Giannis doesn’t sign the super max before then, you can be certain that will be the main point of emphasis for the commentary team.

De Soto, West Salem Request Football Conference Realignment for 2022

By Adam Roberts – 12/1/2020

Two area schools have requested to change their football conference affiliation starting in the fall of 2022.

Today was the official deadline for WIAA schools to request football-only conference realignment for that season, and De Soto and West Salem both are seeking a change. If the requests are approved, De Soto would switch from the Ridge & Valley Conference to the 8-Player South, while West Salem would leave the Mississippi Valley and join former MVC opponent Aquinas in the Coulee.

Also notable is River Falls, who is requesting a switch from the MVC back to the Big Rivers. The Wildcats still have not played a down of MVC football due to their season switching to the alternate spring plan.

As Travis Wilson of Wissports.net reports, any moves would require corresponding moves to keep conference numbers the same. The football-only realignment of a few years ago was done with the purpose of keeping conferences at 8 teams. A task force will overview each request and then the WIAA Board of Control will have the final say.

Packers Cut WR Darrius Shepherd

By Adam Roberts – 12/1/2020

I hinted that the Packers’ signing of Tavon Austin could mean the writing is on the wall for wide receiver and special teamer Darrius Shepherd. Today, we got confirmation that this is in fact the case.

Green Bay is releasing wide receiver Darrius Shepherd, who has served as the primary kick and punt returner since the injury to Tyler Ervin. This doesn’t necessarily mean the end of Shepherd in Green Bay, however; he could still be added to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Shepherd of course had a costly fumble on a kickoff return against the Indianapolis Colts a couple of weeks ago, and as we saw with Ty Montgomery a few years ago against the Rams, one bad play building upon a string of mediocre performances can cost you a roster spot.

Austin will be eligible to practice with Green Bay tomorrow.

Packers To Sign Tavon Austin

By Adam Roberts – 12/1/2020

The Packers are bringing in a 2013 Top 10 draft pick that has some familiarity with the Matt LaFleur coaching style.

Green Bay is set to sign wide receiver and special teamer Tavon Austin this week ahead of their game Sunday against Philadelphia. Austin spent his first five years with the St. Louis/LA Rams, and in his last year with the club LaFleur was the team’s offensive coordinator. Between 2017 and 18 Austin caught 21 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns for the Cowboys, and was most recently with the 49ers, but he never played for San Francisco after going on IR this summer.

Tyler Ervin remains injured for Green Bay, so Austin’s presence could indicate a desire to move on from Darrius Shepherd in the return game. Shepherd has returned 11 kicks this year for 227 yards.

Vikings Comeback and Beat Carolina 28-27

By Adam Roberts – 11/30/2020

Kicker Joey Slye had been money twice for the Panthers against the Vikings, but after Chad Beebe caught a 10 yarder from Kirk Cousins with 46 seconds to go in the game, his services would be called upon once again from 54 yards away.

Turns out, the third time was the charm for the Vikings’ special teams.

Slye’s kick missed wide left by a mile, and Minnesota held on for a 28-27 win. It also ensured that Beebe’s redemption arc would stand, after muffing a punt return and giving the ball back to the Panthers at a critical juncture in the game. Beebe finished with 7 catches for 63 yards and his game-winning score.

Minnesota has pulled into a tie for second in the NFC North courtesy of Green Bay disposing of the Bears. The Vikings are back at home on Sunday for a noon game against Jacksonville.

Wisconsin Men’s Basketball Ranked Fourth

By Adam Roberts – 11/30/2020

Don’t look now, but 2-0 Wisconsin men’s basketball has climbed into the national Top 5.

Wisconsin moves up to fourth in the AP poll today after a 92-58 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Friday evening in which they began the night on a 25-0 run. The Badgers are joined in the Top 5 by Iowa at #3 and Illinois at #5. Michigan State is the fourth Big Ten team in the Top 10 at #8. Ohio State and Rutgers are the other two Big Ten ranked teams at 23rd and 24th respectively.

A two yearly in-state nonconference games are renewed this week with Tuesday’s game against Green Bay and Friday’s road contest at Marquette. After that, Wisconsin will host (RV) Louisville in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Coverage of all these games can be heard right here on your official Badger station, ESPN La Crosse 105.5!

Rodgers Throws 4 TDs, Packers Beat Bears 41-25

By Adam Roberts – 11/30/2020

I know many people don’t like prevent defense late in blowout games. Believe me, I don’t either. I prefer to see a complete, sixty minute start-to-finish blowout to cement in my head that a team is as good as we think they are.

That being said, last night’s 41-25 Packers win over Chicago was essentially a 41-10 victory. The result was expected going into the evening, and for once, Green Bay actually didn’t play down to an opponent.

If you take out the fourth quarter, Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky was not great in his return to the starting role. Entering the fourth, he had 130 yards passing, a 1-yard touchdown toss, two interceptions, and a lost fumble taking by Preston Smith into the endzone. While run defense STILL has not been figured out by Mike Pettine and the Packers, Trubisky was playing from behind from the get-go, and in modern day football an inept quarterback cannot win games.

Conversely, the Packer offense put up their second-highest point total of the season behind four touchdown tosses by Aaron Rodgers along with 189 yards on the ground. Aaron Jones rushed for 90 yards followed by Jamaal Williams with 73. Williams also had a nice touchdown in the third quarter muscling off would-be tacklers up the middle.

The win puts the Packers up three games in the NFC North with five games remaining. Green Bay next gets Carson Wentz/Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday.

INJURY NEWS

Center Corey Linsley left the game with a hamstring injury, but according to head coach Matt LaFleur it does not appear to be a season-ending situation. Credit should be given to Elgton Jenkins, who stepped in and played center the rest of the game. Jenkins has now played at every position on the O-Line, and has proven to be an underrated but valuable asset for a Packers offensive front that has played great over the last two games. Safety Darnell Savage also left the game with a back injury after recording two interceptions of Trubisky; his status going forward is unknown.

Bucks Sign Nik Stauskas

By Adam Roberts – 11/27/2020

The Milwaukee Bucks have signed a former top-10 draft selection.

The Bucks have agreed to a one-year deal with Canadian wing Nik Stauskas. He was the eighth-overall pick in the 2014 draft and last played in the NBA for the Cavaliers in the 2018-2019 season. Since then, Stauskas has been playing overseas with the Spanish club Saski Baskonia. He averaged 5.5 points and two rebounds with Cleveland, and last year in Spain averaged 7.2 points and a rebound and a half.
