Viterbo Volleyball Falls at Home Versus Mayville State

By Adam Roberts – 10/20/2020

Viterbo volleyball was ready to go back on September 26th against Mayville State, but COVID-19 concerns forced their home opener against the Comets to be pushed back. That was one day after their original home opener against Presentation had been postponed for the same reason.

Almost one month later, the V-Hawks were finally able to take to the R.W. Beggs Senior Gym floor.

The result, however, was not the desired one; a three sets to one loss for the third straight V-Hawk defeat. In front of a limited-attendance crowd of 50 individuals, Viterbo committed 31 attack errors to just 12 for the Comets, and had 10 service errors despite six aces. Lily Pyle led the V-Hawks with 25 total attacks and nine kills.

Viterbo is next scheduled to take the floor against Dickinson State on March 12th of next year.

Sid Hartman, MN Sports Columnist, Dies at Age 100

By Adam Roberts – 10/19/2020

If you grew up on Minnesota sports at any point in the last 75 years, you are likely familiar with the work of Sid Hartman.

The Minneapolis native was a staple of sports in the Golden Gopher state since he first starting selling newspapers in the late 20s, and chances are you’ve read one of his over 21,000 bylined stories. The Star Tribune is probably the most recognized news sources in the state, and Hartman was one of their most recognized columnists.

Patrick Reusse penned a heart-felt tribute today that tells the story of the 100 year old far better than I could hope to do, but as someone who is still in the early stages of the industry of sports broadcasting and journalism, I can only hope to be half the intrepid reporter Sid was. I’ve always hoped that my interviews can have a little touch of personality, to avoid feeling like I’m just going through the motions of conversations, in an attempt to build relationships and connections much in the same way Sid did. His commitment to the craft was largely unparalleled; I might look at a station manager crazy if they asked me to report for $11.50 a week, but in the 40s, it was a pleasure for Hartman just to get himself back in the reporting world. I’d bet he’d probably have taken the job for half that salary.

From the Vikings, to the Twins, North Stars/Wild, Timberwolves, Golden Gophers, and every team in-between, Hartman always delivered. And no doubt, his legacy will inspire new generations of journalists and reporters to strive for his level of commitment to the industry.

3 Cousins INTs; Vikings Fall to Falcons 40-23

By Adam Roberts – 10/19/2020

Driving into work this morning, the guys on Keyshawn, JWill, and Zubin were discussing the worst teams in the NFL, and after the obvious first of the worst in the New York Jets, the conversation went to who would be right behind them or closest to tying them. I can’t remember who said it, but the Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons were both brought up. Atlanta shouldn’t surprise many, with their 0-5 start and the firing of both their head coach and GM as sure a sign as any that they could compete for the title of worst in the league.

But Minnesota being included in that conversation likely raised many eyebrows. After all, this is a Minnesota team that is only three years removed from the “Minneapolis Miracle” and being a game away from the Super Bowl in their home stadium, and just last year, they went into New Orleans and got an overtime playoff win in the Superdome.

But fast forward to 2020, and the Vikings have too many problems to list. They were without their leading rusher this week, and the play of Dalvin Cook’s backup left plenty to be desired. Quarterback Kirk Cousins finished 24 of 36 for 343 yards with a pair of touchdowns to rookie Justin Jefferson, but had three interceptions as well in the 40-23 loss that drops Minnesota to a head scratching 1-5 going into the bye.

After the loss, Cousins said he’s aware that he won’t be the quarterback to finish the season if he keeps throwing interceptions the way he has been, and head coach Mike Zimmer did not comment on whether he would consider replacing Cousins due to his inaccuracy. It stands to reason Cousins won’t be benched just yet; placing backup Sean Mannion into the starting role with a November 1st game against the currently 4-1 Green Bay Packers would be a ruthless move. However, it’s safe to say defenses aren’t exactly shaking in their boots when they see the Vikings on their schedule at the moment.

Referring back to the original point of the article, I think there are some other teams we need to consider for second worst in the NFL. The Football Team comes to mind, along with the team that “beat” them this week in the Giants; even the Jaguars could fill that role, having lost five straight following a Week One win and looking like they have no idea with what to do at the quarterback position. However, should Minnesota, and Cousins in particular, look as hapless in the Packer-Viking game November 1st, maybe they DO start #TankingforTrevor. Me personally, I wouldn’t go that far just yet.

Rodgers Pressured Often In 38-10 Loss at Tampa

By Adam Roberts – 10/19/2020

If you took a bathroom break after the first quarter, you would’ve likely felt the match up between the Green Bay Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers was due to be a one-sided affair.

You would have been correct. It just didn’t end up being the one-sided game we expected entering the second quarter.

With 13:15 to go in the second frame, Bucs punter Bradley Pinion booted the ball back to Green Bay after the Packer defense forced another Tampa punt. The Packers on their previous two drives went 54 yards for a field goal and 80 yards for a touchdown, respectively, and chewed up 12 minutes and 5 seconds of total clock. The offense was clicking, the defense was stout, and the opponent looked lost.

Until an Aaron Rodgers pass ended up in the arms of Tampa corner Jamel Dean and took a trip 32 yards the other way.

Prior to that Pick Six, Rodgers had gone 7-11 for 94 yards. Starting on the Pick Six drive, he went 1-5 with two total interceptions, and proceeded to throw for just 66 more yards on the day. On the radio broadcast, Wayne Larivee and Larry McCarren commented often on the play of Tampa’s inside linebacker combo of Lavonte David and Devin White, and for good reason: the duo combined for 18 total tackles, five and a half for loss, and two and a half sacks. They were electric and running straight through an offensive line hurting from an injury to David Bakhtiari. David and White were part of the larger issue of the day: Rodgers was pressured from start to finish, while an immobile, 43-year-old Brady could get cozy in the pocket and take his time finding his target.

INJURIES

As mentioned above, left tackle David Bakhtiari went out with a chest injury in the second half. Head coach Matt LaFleur said after the loss the team doesn’t believe it’s a long-term concern. “I know he’s still being evaluated but we’re hopeful that he will be OK”. Bakhtiari has been a constant presence on Aaron’s blind side since Week 6 of 2017, and while Rick Wagner played fine in his place, Rodgers is probably hoping to have his usual left tackle back in place for the Houston game this week. In addition, safety Darnell Savage suffered a quad injury late in the third quarter and did not return. His status is unknown.

Vikings RB Dalvin Cook Out vs Falcons

By Adam Roberts – 10/16/2020

Fantasy football players, you might want to check your lineups.

One of the more productive running backs in the NFL, both from a fantasy and real-life perspective, is out this week.

Vikings back Dalvin Cook suffered an injury in the second half of the team’s loss at Seattle, and will not play this Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. Head coach Mike Zimmer said Cook’s groin injury has kept Cook from performing at the necessary level to compete, and so the Viking offense will now turn to Alexander Mattison to pick up the slack.

Mattison had plenty of touches filling in for Cook last weekend, rushing 20 times for 112 yards. Minnesota has high expectations at the position for good reason; Cook currently leads the league with 489 yards.

It also figures to be a big day for Mattison, as the Falcons’ defensive line, and pretty much the entire team for that matter, has been much maligned so far in 2020. The defense has allowed 551 rushing yards and gives up an average of 32.3 points per game. Throw in the fact that this will be the team’s first game since firing head coach Dan Quinn and GM Thomas Dimitroff. Former defensive coordinator Raheem Morris takes over as head coach this week, and Jeff Ulbrich takes over as DC.

Mattison figures to be a popular running back selection this week across fantasy leagues, and Vikings’ fans can only hope he can play the stopgap role well with all the uncertainty surrounding Cook.

2 High School Football Games Tonight Cancelled

By Adam Roberts – 10/16/2020

In my newest installment of our High School Football Preview, I mentioned how despite all the craziness with the NFL and the amount of COVID-19 positives popping up around the league, that at least high school football seemed to be trending in the right direction with few area game cancellations or postponements.

I really need to learn to just stop typing these thoughts out loud for the sake of a quick attempt at humor.

Yesterday afternoon, we learned that #1 (Class 2A) Caledonia would have to wait another week to try and win their 70th straight game after their match up tonight against Stewartville was cancelled. This appears to be despite the wishes of Coach Carl Fruechte and the Warriors, and they are still scheduled to face Dover-Eyota next week (We’ll have that game on ESPN La Crosse 105.5 at Noon Saturday, October 24th!). Then today, Luther AD Joel Babinec announced that due to COVID-19 positive test and close contact quarantining, tonight’s Luther-Iowa/Grant game was also cancelled. That’s the second athletic contest Luther has cancelled this week after suspending their volleyball season on Thursday.

Fingers crossed for no more changes to this week’s schedule, as we head out to West Salem this evening for the Panthers and Timberwolves. Our coverage begins with the High School Football Preview Show at 6pm!

Bucks Showing Interest in Bogdanovic

By Adam Roberts – 10/16/2020

The season certainly didn’t end the way most Bucks coaches, fans, media, and players desired or excepted, even with taking the halted season and resumption in a bubble into consideration. Milwaukee was once again the top seed in the Eastern Conference and had momentum heading from a four game sweep of Orlando heading into their semifinal match up with Miami. Things stalled, though, due to a lack of what some have called real championship depth around Giannis Antetokounmpo.

So, as Milwaukee enters into the offseason, they have been tasked by many in the local, state, and national media with finding more pieces to put around Giannis, not just in the hopes of taking the next step to the NBA Finals for 2020-21, but to ensure that Giannis will re-sign with the Bucks. Early rumors linked current OKC point guard Chris Paul to Milwaukee, but he’s also been rumored, as seemingly every star is, to join the current champs in LA.

While we wait and see what happens with Paul, the most recent player linked in reports to Milwaukee is Sacramento King restricted free agent Bogdan Bogdanovic. In what many would say was the best season so far for the Serbian product, Bogdanovic posted 15.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 2019-20, and when he was promoted to a starter the Kings played notably better.

According to the Locked On Kings podcast back in September, general manager Monte McNair had been rumored to want a sign and trade with Bogdanovic, but the team ended up sending Dewayne Dedmon away instead in February. It’s also important to note with Bogdanovic that the Kings have the right of first refusal, giving them the opportunity to match any offer sheet.

Either way, Milwaukee’s front office is certainly feeling the pressure to sign the right pieces to aid Giannis. After the season ended the two parties met, and that meeting ended with an assurance from Bucks brass that they would do everything in their power to bring top talent to Milwaukee. It’s all shaping up for what is likely the most important Bucks offseason in about two decades.

High School Football Week Four Preview

By Adam Roberts – 10/15/2020

While COVID-19 has made scheduling a week of NFL and college football games an absolute chore, some stability appears to have found its way into high school football in our area (for now). This week, we have a bit more clarity about what games will and won’t be happening, as well as what the plan is for some schools who will move football to the spring. Both Holmen and Sparta have unveiled their spring football schedules for 2021, and they both include games against La Crosse Logan (the Sparta schedule does not currently have a game planned against La Crosse Central but Holmen will play the Red Raiders on April 1st).

Looking at this week’s schedule, a number of games stand out, from Caledonia having a chance to win its 70th consecutive game to the first of two straight scheduled games between Hillsboro and De Soto. Let’s look over each of this week’s scheduled contests:

 VS

WINONA COTTER (0-1) @ WABASHA-KELLOGG (0-0) (Thursday, 10/15)

We mentioned Caledonia is playing for its 70th straight win this week, a streak that has garnered attention across the country for its longevity and sheer inconceivability. On the flipside, Thursday night’s lone Coulee Region game features two teams who have struggled mightily to find any success as of late. The Ramblers have lost 17 straight dating back to October of 2017, and last week fell 28-8 to Hayfield despite a decent defensive showing. Their opponents this week haven’t fared all that much better the last few years; in the same time frame as the Ramblers’ losing streak, the Falcons have gone 4-13. Despite a 1-7 campaign last year, Wabasha-Kellogg did win big over Cotter 40-6 in Week Seven; it was the only time the Falcons scored more than twice in a game all season.

Prediction: Wabasha-Kellogg 34 Winona Cotter 7

 VS

TOMAH (1-2) @ WEST SALEM (0-1) (6pm on ESPN LA CROSSE 105.5, espnlacrosse.com, TuneIn)

Anyone listening to last week’s Coulee Region Football game between West Salem and Onalaska likely heard Mitchell Speltz commend the defense of the Panthers many times in the second half of the broadcast and later on the Pizza Oven Postgame Show, as well. It was quite merited, as very few teams hold Tom Yashinsky coached teams to under 20 points, let alone a program that went win-less last year. Head coach Justin Jehn is trying to build a new culture of winning at a school that just three seasons ago was part of a three-way tie for the MVC championship. They get Tomah this week, who are in the midst of their own culture-defining season under first year head coach Joe Prontz. A big boost to that program was granted last week, as the Timberwolves used two fourth-quarter goal-line scores to comeback against Reedsburg. Despite this, I believe the Panthers should have the tools they need to manage quarterback Justin Gerke this week after largely controlling Ona’s Ayden Larson on the deep ball. If they can shore up their rush defense this week and Noah LaFleur takes the next step as the starting QB, I actually like the Panthers to get their first win in a while; the fact that this game will be their home opener should help, as well.

Prediction: West Salem 20 Tomah 14

  VS

ONALASKA (2-1) @ ST CROIX CENTRAL (2-1)

After looking like a classic Hilltopper offense in Week One against Tomah, Onalaska has been a little out of sorts on that side of the ball in the two games that followed. A speedy, stout defensive Edgar secondary kept Ona in the single digits in Week Two, and as mentioned above West Salem’s D almost powered the Panthers to victory. The Hilltoppers were a 54 yard Albert Romero big-play touchdown run away from falling to 1-2 last week, and this week Coach Yashinsky has penciled in a game against another difficult opponent. St. Croix Central is just a couple of seasons removed from their run to state in 2018, the third straight year they made it to Camp Randall, and they will be hungry this week after a shocking loss to Ellsworth last week. The shock of it was less to do with the opponent (Ellsworth is 3-0 this year, so they’re certainly a solid opponent), and more to do with the fact that it was another fourth-quarter comeback; Ellsworth won the Battle of the Panthers despite trailing 22-13 with 6:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. With that in mind, the Panthers of St. Croix Central will be craving a rebound game. Ona’s stout defensive line must be up to the task of stopping the SCC backs; they totalled up 289 yards on the ground in a losing effort.

Prediction: St. Croix Central 27 Onalaska 22

  VS

WINONA (1-0) @ #8 (CLASS 4A) BYRON (1-0)

While it’s just a one game sample, another offense that struggled last week was Winona’s. Their 225 yards of total offense was just enough to beat a usually underwhelming Austin squad 14-9, and it dropped them out of the Class 4A rankings this week. The biggest problem for Winona early on was procedural penalties, along with an offense learning largely on the fly after having to replace seven scholarship athletes from last year. QB Jacob Heftman did have two touchdown tosses on 6-14 passing for 159 yards. I can only assume that this week has been an ultra-intense week of practice for head coach John Cassellius, as the Winhawks now head into #8 Byron’s house on the heels of the Bears’ 59-0 season-opening schlacking of Albert Lea and will need to be in tip-top shape to have any chance to win on the road. Winona has a big winning streak of their own to defend as well; the Winhawks have been victorious in 25 straight contests. That could be in jeopardy this week.

Prediction: Byron 35 Winona 21

 VS

AQUINAS (2-0) @ WESTBY (0-0)

Possibly in tribute to the late Joe Laurinaitis, the Blugolds have been true Road Warriors this year; trips to Viroqua and Mauston have showcased the burgeoning offensive talents of quarterback Jackson Flottmeyer, Will Cambio, and the entire Aquinas offense. This week, the Blugolds visit Westby, a team that had its season put on hold right as they were getting ready to welcome Onalaska to town back in September. Coach Andy Hulst sounded very stressed out when I talked to him a mere hour before the stoppage was announced, but I have to imaging he’s absolutely jazzed to be preparing for another game this week. That said, there will likely be a lot of jitters for the Norsemen, and a cool and collected Blugolds unit should win this week. (Also, shout out to Blugolds’ coach Joseph Blatz, had it not been for him I wouldn’t have even known for sure if this game was happening this week!)

Prediction: Aquinas 31 Westby 18

 VS

IOWA-GRANT (0-2) @ LUTHER (1-2)

Someone has to win this game, and I believe it will be Luther. Though the Knights’ offense has come back down to earth after their explosive win over Boscobel with two less-than-stellar outings, at least they have an offense to work with. Iowa-Grant has yet to score a point through two games played, and they have not looked competitive at all against either albeit solid programs River Ridge and Highland. Last week against De Soto the passing attack led by Dillon Yang wasn’t awful (10-20, 113 yds, 1 INT), and there could be a great opportunity for the Knights’ receivers to rack up some big yards this week.

Prediction: Luther 36 Iowa-Grant 7

 VS

HILLSBORO (0-1) @ DE SOTO (1-0)

This will be the first of two games scheduled between Hillsboro and De Soto; the Pirates had a game scheduled against Ithaca for this week, but the Bulldogs shuttering their football program necessitated a quick backup plan from coach Ev Wick. De Soto was effective on the ground last week against Luther, and will per usual pound the rock against Hillsboro. In addition, another home game in The Pit should be kind to the Pirates; they’re 5-1 in their last six home games.

Prediction: De Soto 28 Hillsboro 14

 VS

INDEPENDENCE/GILMANTON (1-1) @ MELROSE-MINDORO (1-1)

The Mustangs were galloping once again last week. After a sluggish opener against Whitehall, Mel-Min racked up 226 yards on the ground against Eleva-Strum, and they needed every one of their four rushing touchdowns in a 27-21 win. The defense also found their groove last week, forcing three Cardinal interceptions. It was very interesting to watch all-purpose senior Tucker Sbraggia; he rushed for a score and as a punter averaged 40 yards a boot. On the flipside, Indy/Gil has written a tale of two games so far; they played a very good game in the opener against Eleva-Strum 22-0, but then they ran into Pepin-Alma last week, losing via two big-play runs 20-8. This one, like many Dairyland games, will play out closely in my opinion and could go either way.

Prediction: Mel-Min 21 Indy/Gilmanton 20

 VS

BLAIR-TAYLOR (2-0) @ PEPIN-ALMA (2-0)

This is the kind of game you want to see late in the season; in a normal year, this October 16th game could be for the Dairyland title. Both teams were tested last week but ultimately prevailed, with Pepin-Alma beating Indy as mentioned above, and Blair-Taylor just scoring enough over Viroqua 30-22; QB Cain Fremstad was pretty efficient in that win, going 8-11 for 149 yards, two scores, and one interception. This game likely will hang on what kind of game Pepin-Alma’s Lane Wieczorek. The senior running back rushed for 111 yards and a score against the Indees and had three scores against Mel-Min Week One. This is another pick ’em and may be the game to watch this week.

Prediction: Pepin-Alma 28 Blair-Taylor 27

 VS

#1 (CLASS 2A) CALEDONIA (1-0) @ STEWARTVILLE (1-0)

*UPDATE* Per the Caledonia Twitter page, this game has been cancelled.

VS

SPRING GROVE (1-0) @ GRAND MEADOW (1-0)

This one is hard to call for a couple of reasons. First, there aren’t a ton of statistics from either team’s wins last week, and secondly that there just isn’t enough coverage of 8/9 man football in general (we’re trying to help change that!). What we do know is that each team has had a ton of recent success, and that Grand Meadow was the victor in the most recent matchup between these two. The 9-man sectional semifinal between these two last year was a very close game until the very final minutes of the fourth quarter, when GM’s Dusty Copley ran for a 4 yard score followed by a Daniel Smith rushing score to make it a 24-14 game. Needless to say there is plenty of history between the two schools, and on a chilly Friday night the game could very well be determined at the line of scrimmage. (On a non-football note, if you never have, look up Grand Meadow High School on Google Maps, it’s one of the most interesting high school architectural setups I’ve ever seen)

Prediction: Grand Meadow 28 Spring Grove 22

 VS

RANDOLPH (1-0) @ RUSHFORD-PETERSON (0-1)

Defense was king for the Randolph Rockets in their season-opening win over Bethlehem Academy; they forced four sacks and an interception en route to their 20-7 victory. Meanwhile, while there are no stats on Rushford-Peterson’s loss to Blooming Prairie (submit your stats to MN Football Hub, people!), it’s safe to say you don’t allow 37 points by being stout on D. Of course, we must consider that Blooming Prairie are the defending Class 1A state champions who have made it to the state tournament every year since 2011. Randolph has been steadily improving as a program the last three seasons, and will give the Trojans all they can handle in their home opener.

Prediction: Randolph 22 Rushford-Peterson 15

Viterbo Volleyball Postpones Game vs Mayville State

By Adam Roberts – 10/15/2020

Viterbo women’s volleyball was scheduled to play a match tonight against NSAA foe Mayville State. However, that game was called off yesterday out of what the university called “an abundance of caution for student-athletes, staff, and fans, and for the health and safety of everyone involved.”

Viterbo has been the one university in the area pushing forward with atheltics; UWL has not held athletic competition since March 15th (an 11-9 lacrosse loss to Augustana), and the same goes for Winona State, who’s last official contest was a March 11th women’s tennis win over Quincy University.

It’s not the first time this fall that a V-Hawk volleyball home opener has been cancelled, and for now we’ll have to wait and see if a makeup date is announced.

Holmen; Sparta Football Schedule for Spring 2021 Released

By Adam Roberts – 10/14/2020

According to the La Crosse Tribune’s Todd Sommerfeldt, Holmen football has a schedule of games planned for the alternate fall season next spring. If all goes according to plan, the Vikings would play the following schedule next year:

  • 3/26 @ La Crosse Logan
  • 4/1 vs La Crosse Central
  • 4/9 @ Menasha
  • 4/16 vs Sparta
  • 4/23 vs Eau Claire North

In addition, Sparta also unveiled a spring football spring schedule yesterday afternoon:

  • 3/26 @ GET
  • 4/1 vs La Crosse Logan
  • 4/9 vs Eau Claire Memorial
  • 4/16 @ Holmen
  • 4/23 vs Superior
  • 4/30 @ Eau Claire North

Holmen and Sparta both moved to the alternate season earlier this month without playing a down of football. La Crosse Central and Logan had announced their move to the alternate season after the WIAA announced it as an option earlier in September.
