Bucks Defeat Suns 109-103; Even Series 2-2

By Adam Roberts – 7/15/2021

With Kareem and Oscar in the house, and 25,000+ outside Fiserv Forum, Milwaukee was in a position to either make the 2021 NBA Finals a best-of-three or fall into a daunting 3-1 hole with two road wins necessary to win the Finals. In Game Three, Giannis was the superstar with a 41 point performance.

Last night, the 40 point star would be Khris Middleton.

The Bucks’ shooting forward recorded 40 on the nose on 15-33 shooting with a 7-8 night at the free throw line. Giannis added 26 and 14, Milwaukee had five guys in double figures and forced 17 Phoenix turnovers on their way to a 109-103 Game Four win. It was a good thing that those turnovers turned into fastbreak points as well; Devin Booker was electric for the Suns with 42 points and very nearly carried the Suns over the hump by himself.

But it was those turnovers and the Bucks’ defense in the fourth quarter which truly provided the difference. The highlight of the night came within the final two minutes, when Booker had Deandre Ayton set up perfectly for an alley oop that would have tied the contest at 101. Giannis, however, had other plans and was able to pivot from a standstill at the free throw line and contest the shot just enough to block it away.

Statistically, there was a lot going in the Suns’ favor during a good chunk of the game; they shot an impressive 51.3% and outshot the Bucks both from three and the free throw line. But four Suns starters had negative plus-minuses, and again the 17-5 turnovers going against Phoenix led to easy buckets for Milwaukee. Booker’s supporting cast being held largely in check didn’t help matters for Phoenix, either; Chris Paul was held to just 10 points on 5-of-13 shooting and had five of the Suns’ turnovers. Deandre Ayton ended with six points and 17 rebounds in the setback.

So now the series shifts to Phoenix once again this Saturday, with neither team finding a way to win on the road yet. Our coverage from the desert begins at 7pm on ESPN La Crosse 105.5 and espnlacrosse.com!

Aquinas Sr Jacy Weisbrod Commits To Northern Colorado

By Adam Roberts – 7/14/2021

Aquinas girl’s basketball under head coach Dave Donarski has churned out its fair share of college athletes over the years, and they can lay claim to another one today.

WXOW’s Scott Emerich reports that senior Jacy Weisbrod has chosen to attend Northern Colorado, a Division One member of the Big Sky Conference. Back in February, Weisbrod was a tour de force in the D3 State Tournament back in February, with Emerich noting that she set records for three pointers made in both a game and in a tournament.

Jacy joins a laundry list of Blugolds, both boys and girls, who will take their talents to collegiate programs, with notables like Bronson Koenig at Wisconsin and Lexi Donarski at Iowa State. Must be something in the water!

Bucks Assistants Ham, Lee Finalists For Washington HC Position

By Adam Roberts – 7/14/2021

The Washington Wizards have started to finalize the names on their list of head coach candidates, and two Milwaukee assistants are on the list.

Darvin Ham and Charles Lee join Denver assistant Wes Unseld Jr. as finalists for the position, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Ham has been the lead assistant in Milwaukee under Mike Budenholzer for some time now, and many within the league have called him a top assistant coach across the association. Ham interviewed for the position earlier this month, and he also played for the Wizards during the 1997-98 season.

As for Lee, the 36 year old is another long-time Bud assistant back to the Atlanta years. He is most noted for his time at Bucknell University, especially the 2006 season when he was the Patriot League player of the year as part of a Bison team that upset Arkansas as a nine-seed, their highest tournament seed in school history.

No timeline has been announced as for when the Wizards will make a selection, though this is likely due to the fact that the Bucks are still alive for a championship.

Brewers’ All-Stars Have Mixed Results

By Adam Roberts – 7/14/2021

The National League just can’t catch a break in the MLB All-Star Game. With yesterday’s 5-2 loss to the American League, the NL has now dropped eight straight midsummer classics.

For me, the primary reason for watching last night’s game was two-fold. First and foremost, I wanted to finally get to see Shohei Ohtani in his element; his pitching was excellent although he did bat 0-2 leading off and DHing. The second reason was the same as every other All-Star game: seeing what the Brewers who made the game could do on the big stage.

This year, the results were a bit up and down.

At the plate, MIlwaukee’s Omar Narvaez went 1-for-2 with a single. On the mound, the usually reliable Corbin Burnes gave up four hits in the second inning and also surrendered two runs in his lone frame to take the loss. Later, Freddy Peralta struck out three in an inning of work.

The Brewers will travel to Cincinnati for a series against the Reds starting Friday.

Team USA Loses Back-To-Back Exhibitions For First Time In Pro Era

By Adam Roberts – 7/13/2021

Looks like Team USA Basketball is going to appreciate the arrival of Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday even more than we thought.

The U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team has now lost back-to-back exhibition games for the first time since pros joined the roster in 1992. Australia upset the Americans 91-to-83 Monday in Las Vegas to get the team off to an 0-and-2 start. They also lost to Nigeria over the weekend, a team they beat by 80+ points back in 2012. Team USA had been 54-and-2 in exhibition games since pros joined the roster. They’ve now matched those losses over nearly three decades in only three days.

Middleton and Holiday are obviously occupied at the moment, but will be a part of the roster that competes in Tokyo this year.

Jeff Wiseman Approved As Next GET Head Football Coach

By Adam Roberts – 7/13/2021

Zac Bellman has been the primary source of news for me on all things related to Trempealeau County since I’ve taken over this position. And while he’s going to be leaving the Trempealeau County Times later this month, he did break some juicy GET football news before he leaves.

Bellman reports that the school has plans to hire Jeff Wiseman as head football coach for this upcoming fall. Wiseman is connected pretty closely to the retiring Jon Steffenhagen, having served as an assistant for him last spring. He also will fit in well in the Coulee Region having worked at Arcadia as well.

GET finished the spring season with a 4-1 record, losing to the Arcadia in the season finale. They’ll open the 2021 fall season August 20th at home against West Salem. (Author’s note: make sure you follow Zac on Twitter @ZacBellman_WNY so you can follow him to the next stop on his journey!)

Brewers Pick OF Sal Frelick, 2B Tyler Black In MLB Draft

By Adam Roberts – 7/12/2021

This year has been a bizarre one in terms of sports calendars. We normally do not have the MLB Draft, Home Run Derby, and NBA Finals overlapping each other, but a global pandemic will do that sort of things.

While the Bucks were taking care of business against the Suns in Game Three, the Brewers were securing a pair of prospects.

Milwaukee selected Sal Frelick and Tyler Black in the MLB draft last night. In Frelick, the Crew adds yet another outfielder; the Boston College center fielder is currently ranked 11th overall by MLB pipeline. Black meanwhile was the 33rd overall pick and is a second baseman from Canada and currently plays for Wright State.

The selection of Frelick was curious, since the team notably selected hot prospect Garrett MItchell last year. Last season, Frelick hit .359 for the Eagles with six home runs and 13 stolen bases.

The draft continued today with the team picking Louisville third baseman Alex Binelas.

All-Star Week picks up this evening with the Home Run Derby in one of the best home run parks in the big leagues out in Colorado, followed by the big game tomorrow night at Coors Field. Both Freddy Peralta and Omar Narvaez have been added to the National League roster, and will join Corbin Burnes, Josh Hader, and Brandon Woodruff.

Johnny Davis and USA U19 Team Win World Cup Gold

By Adam Roberts – 7/12/2021

Johnny Davis was already the Coulee Region basketball world’s golden boy. Now he just has some extra hardware to prove it.

Davis and the USA U19 team won gold at the FIBA World Cup in Latvia with an 83-81 nailbiter against France to cap off a perfect 7-0 run in the tournament. The sophomore guard from La Crosse provided his best effort against Korea during group phase play, where he posted 9 points on 5-6 shooting, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals in 17 minutes of action.

In helping secure the second straight gold for Team USA, Davis became the first Badger to win a gold medal for USA Basketball since Sam Dekker in 2012 as part of the FIBA Americas Championship team.

Davis will head back to the states to get ready for his next season with Wisconsin, which begins November 15th against Providence in the Gavitt Tipoff.

Giannis Drops 41; Bucks Beat Suns 120-100

By Adam Roberts – 7/12/2021

I had a privilege of getting to travel solo to the Deer District for yesterday’s NBA Finals game in Milwaukee. Standing shoulder to shoulder with over 25,000 other individuals outside Fiserv Forum was a sports experience unlike any I’ve ever had before and made me feel like I was a part of the massive crowds from World Cups in the past. I’d probably try to go with friends next time, but it was still awesome to share in the camaraderie of everyone else in downtown Milwaukee.

To top it off, the game going on inside the forum was plenty exciting and engaging to keep the energy lively outside.

Facing the possibility of a 3-0 deficit in the Finals, Milwaukee stepped up big on their home court. Giannis was naturally the star once again, with 41 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists coupled with 21 from Jrue Holiday and three other Bucks in double figures. The 120-100 victory ensured that the series will at least see a Game Five, and kept the dream of #BucksIn6 alive.

Of course the result of the game must take into consideration that Phoenix star Devin Booker played only 29 minutes for 10 points and was held out for a sizeable chunk of the end of the game. Whether the decision by head coach Monty Williams was for load management or other reasons is up to you to decide, but one of the Suns’ two biggest play makers was a nonfactor during what is the most important part of the game. I have a hard time believing that will be the case going forward in this series.

Stat wise, the Bucks shot just under 48 percent for the game and just under 39 percent from three. Also nice to see was Giannis shooting 13-17 from the free throw line, with the friendly confines of Fiserv possibly providing the type of forgiving environment that was plagued him at times on the road.

The series will pick up Wednesday in Milwaukee, with coverage beginning at 7pm on ESPN La Crosse 105.5 and espnlacrosse.com!
